Substantiation Het zal voor dezelfde patiënten gebruikt worden die nu geïndiceerd zijn vanaf 4 jaar. Het geneesmiddel lijkt van toegevoegde waarde naast levetiracetam. Hoe meer succes het heeft als add-on therapie in kinderen van 4-20 jaar, hoe vaker het ook als monotherapie en in kinderen onder de 4 jaar geprobeerd zal worden. Op dit moment lijkt lacosamide, dat ook spoedig voor deze indicatie op de markt komt, een gelijke waarde te hebben ten opzichte van brivaracetam.

Additional remarks Prevalentie onder de 4 jaar is waarschijnlijk rond de 0,35 per 100 dus 0,3-0,4%. Een fractie van deze kinderen zal een zodanig ernstige vorm van epilepsie hebben dat meerdere AED's nodig zijn, bij een nog kleiner deel zal dat brivaracetam zijn. Er zijn 680.000 kinderen van 0-4 jaar in Nederland, dus 0,35% is 2.380. Ongeveer 10% zal moeilijk behandelbare epilepsie hebben. Dit betekent dat er 238 kinderen in aanmerking komen.
