Extended indication Kolbam is geïndiceerd voor de behandeling van aangeboren defecten in de primaire galzuursynthese als gevolg van deficiëntie van sterol-27-hydroxylase (gepresenteerd als cerebrotendineuze xanthomatose, CTX), deficiëntie van 2- (of α-) methylacyl-CoA-racemase (AMACR), of deficiëntie van cholesterol-7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1) bij zuigelingen vanaf de leeftijd van één maand, bij kinderen en adolescenten tot 18 jaar en bij volwassenen.

Additional remarks Cholic acid is een galzuur. Potentiële meerwaarde voor patiënten met sterol 27-hydroxylase, 2-methylacyl-CoA racemase of cholesterol 7a- hydroxylase deficientie. Slechts 7 patiënten zijn behandeld met effect op galzuren en leverwaarden. Van belang is dat voor patiënten met sterol 27-hydroxylase behandeling met chenodeoxycholxuur de eerste keuze is. Alternatieven zijn andere galzuren. Risico: kosten en uitbreiding naar andere indicatie (Zellweger).
