Een studie over Nederlandse gegevens uit 2001 schatte dat bij 28.000 patiënten de diagnose cellulitis of erysipelas van de benen werd gesteld. Daarvan werd circa 10% in het ziekenhuis opgenomen. ABSSSI is een van de meest frequente soorten infecties die in het ziekenhuis worden behandeld, vooral postoperatief wat niet in bovenstaande schatting is meegenomen.
