References Alström heeft een prevalentie van 1-9 op de 1.000.000, een geschat aantal van 50 patiënten in Nederland. De gemiddelde overleving van een patiënt is 40 jaar. Als er uitgegaan wordt van 4/1.000.000 en de overleving de helft is van het gemiddelde. Ongeveer de helft van deze patiënten heeft overgewicht: 1/1.000.000. Dit leidt tot 17 Alström patiënten die mogelijk in aanmerking komen in Nederland. Voor Bardet-Biedl geldt ongeveer dezelfde redenering, dit komt neer op 50 patiënten in Nederland.
