Substantiation Varenicline laat verbetering zien ten opzichte van traanvocht productie en op de symptomen van DED. 27,8% bij placebo, bijna 50% bij varenicline. Er worden wel meer bijwerkingen gevonden, maar deze worden als mild beschreven. Er is een indirecte vergelijking met ciclosporine emulsie gedaan (1). De conclusie was dat varenicline superieur zou zijn. De verwachting is wel dat kunsttranen als eerste gegeven zullen worden in de behandelrichtlijn.

Additional remarks Prevalentie van enige vorm van DED is 7% in vrouwen en 4% in mannen. Prevalentie van ernstige DED is 2%-5% (340.000-850.000 patiënten). Vermoedelijk zullen in eerste instantie patiënten met ernstige DED in aanmerking komen. Dit betreft een fractie van het totale aantal. Vooral patiënten die nu met ciclosporine of serumdruppels worden behandeld. Er waren afgelopen jaar 5.013 patiënten die voor DED behandeld werden met ciclosporine (1).
