Het behandelplan wordt bepaald door de SWAB richtlijn, het ziekenhuis formularium/overleg met microbioloog en infectioloog en gemonitord via het steward principe. Momenteel wordt ceftazidim/avibactam al voorgeschreven in combinatie met aztreonam als afzonderlijke middelen. Er is waarschijnlijk geen voordeel in toediening aangezien ook deze combinatietherapie vier keer per dag gegeven dient te worden. De nieuwe combinatie, Aztreonam-avibactam, bevat geen ceftazidime meer. Dit resulteert in een verbeterde gerichte therapie, waarbij het onnodig toedienen van ceftazidim wordt vermeden en dus bijdraagt aan een vermindering van antimicrobiële resistentie. De inschatting is dat er in totaal voor de behandeling van matig tot ernstige gecompliceerde intra-abdominale infecties en voor de behandeling van matig tot ernstige gecompliceerde urineweginfecties en pneunomia door CRE-MBL producers er maximaal 75 patiënten zijn. Waarvan ongeveer de helft van alle patiënten behandeld zullen worden N=35-40. Ook de prijs van de medicatie zal meespelen in het uiteindelijke volume.
