Het toevoegen van metformine zal op zichzelf geen effect hebben op de nierfunctie, metformine is enkel bedoeld voor de behandeling van diabetes - glucosebehandeling. De twee geneesmiddelen worden al apart voorgeschreven, waarvan canafligozine niet vaak wordt ingezet. Er wordt geen therapeutische meerwaarde verwacht. In totaal waren er 11.239 gebruikers van SGLT-2 remmers. Als blijkt dat het effect op nefropathie positief is verwacht de werkgroep dat het aandeel van canagliflozine wat vaker wordt voorgeschreven. Volgens de Nierstichting heeft 28% van de mensen met diabetes chronische nierschade. Dit zou betekenen dat ongeveer 3.000 gebruikers van SGLT-2 remmers nierproblemen ondervindt en mogelijk voordeel heeft van het gebruik van canagliflozine. Het betreft hier substitutie van andere SGLT-2 remmers. De inschatting is dat canagliflozine waarschijnlijk een bescheiden plaats zal blijven houden in de groep van de SGLT-2 remmers, wel is de verwachting dat de totale groep bij type 2 diabetes zal toenemen. Er wordt verwacht dat canagliflozine / metformine ook bij een zeer beperkt aantal patiënten ingezet zal worden.
