Op het ijzergebrek in het lichaam heeft het ook effect. De vraag is of het goedkopere ferrofumaraat niet grotendeels hetzelfde doet op fosfaat (immers zal dit ook binden). De vraag is nog of er echt meerwaarde is ten opzichte van de standaard behandeling.
