Na modificatie (transductie) met de Lenti-D lentivirale vector zullen de cellen opnieuw worden toegediend (getransplanteerd) aan de patiënt na myeloablatieve conditionering. X-ALD komt voor bij 1-2,5 op de 50.000 jongens wat neerkomt op 170-425 patiënten in Nederland. Er zijn momenteel ongeveer 200 patiënten met X-ALD bekend in Nederland. Van deze groep ontwikkelt slechts een klein deel de cerebrale vorm. De afgelopen jaren is er gemiddeld 1 patiënt getransplanteerd met een allo-SCT. Dit is ook de populatie die voor gentherapie in aanmerking zou komen. De Gezondheidsraad heeft geadviseerd om X-ALD op te nemen in de hielprik. Dit zal mogelijk effect hebben op de patiënten aantallen over twee tot drie jaar. Als de hielprik loopt wordt verwacht dat de één tot twee jongens per jaar die nu bij diagnose niet meer in aanmerking komen voor transplantatie ook behandeld kunnen worden.
