Hoewel exacte prevalentiecijfers ontbreken, suggereren internationale studies dat primaire hypoparathyreoïdie (PHPT) bij jongeren slechts sporadisch voorkomt en vaak een genetische oorsprong heeft. Secundaire hypoparathyreoïdie (SHPT) kan bij kinderen ontstaan door onderliggende aandoeningen zoals vitamine D-deficiëntie of chronische nierziekte. Ook voor SHPT zijn er geen specifieke Nederlandse cijfers beschikbaar. Het gebruik van cinacalcet bij deze patiëntengroep is zeer beperkt: naar schatting wordt het jaarlijks bij slechts vijf tot tien kinderen toegepast, meestal tijdelijk (circa één jaar), aangezien het na een succesvolle niertransplantatie doorgaans niet meer nodig is. Etelcalcetide wordt nog minder frequent voorgeschreven, bijvoorbeeld bij vermoeden van therapieontrouw of bij ernstige bijwerkingen van cinacalcet. Het aantal patiënten dat hiervoor in aanmerking komt, blijft beperkt tot enkele per jaar.
