Er zijn momenteel ongeveer 200 patiënten met X-ALD bekend in Nederland. Van deze groep ontwikkelt slechts een klein deel de cerebrale vorm. De afgelopen jaren is er gemiddeld één patiënt getransplanteerd met een allo-SCT. Dit is ook de populatie die voor gentherapie in aanmerking zou komen. De Gezondheidsraad heeft geadviseerd om X-ALD op te nemen in de hielprik. Dit zal mogelijk effect hebben op de patiënten aantallen over twee tot drie jaar. Het aantal mannen met X-ALD met AMN fenotype is hoog. Als effectiviteit wordt aangetoond dan komen er mogelijk tientallen patiënten voor in aanmerking.
