Bij binding van Pluvicto aan PSMA-expresserende kankercellen levert de bèta-minusemissie van lutetium-177 therapeutische straling aan de doelcel en aan omliggende cellen, en veroorzaakt DNA-schade die kan leiden tot celdood. PSMA is een transmembraaneiwit dat in hoge mate tot expressie komt bij prostaatkanker, waaronder gemetastaseerde castratieresistente prostaatkanker (mCRPC).
