De interne gen/DNA-machine van de cellen “pikt” het gen op en vertaalt de DNA-sequentie, waardoor de cellen grote hoeveelheden interferon alfa-2b eiwit afscheiden, een natuurlijk eiwit dat het lichaam gebruikt om kanker te bestrijden. Substantiation In de fase-2 studie bij 151 BCG-ongevoelige NMIBC-patiënten met CIS behaalde 53% een complete respons na drie maanden, waarvan 46% deze respons nog na twaalf maanden behield. Er zijn bij deze indicatie alternatieven beschikbaar of in ontwikkeling. Dit middel is nog niet opgenomen in Europese of Nederlandse richtlijnen, ook de NVU heeft nog geen standpunt bepaald. Bij dit middel lijkt het te gaan om een beperkt onderbouwd voordeel voor een forse toename in toxiciteit. Het is daarom nog onduidelijk welke plaats dit middel gaat nemen in de behandeling.
