Substantiation Orale semaglutide wordt al langer gebruikt bij diabetes mellitus, maar lijkt minder effectief dan de subcutane variant en gaat mogelijk gepaard met vaker gastro-intestinale bijwerkingen. Subcutaan semaglutide is voor overgewicht momenteel niet vergoed en veel patiënten geven de voorkeur aan nieuwere, potentere middelen zoals tirzepatide. Dit benadrukt de noodzaak van duidelijke behandelrichtlijnen. Hoewel orale semaglutide theoretisch een plek zou kunnen hebben in een stapsgewijze behandelstrategie, lijkt de klinische noodzaak vooralsnog beperkt.
