Substantiation ELIXIR (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03994471) is een fase III, open-label, gerandomiseerde gecontroleerde studie die Xylocore®, een innovatieve formulering op basis van xylitol en L-carnitine, vergelijkt met standaard op glucose gebaseerde regimes, bij patiënten met nierfalen die worden behandeld met continue ambulante PD. Xylocore® kan mogelijk helpen de blootstelling aan glucose en de daarmee samenhangende toxiciteit te verminderen, terwijl tegelijkertijd een adequate peritoneale UF- en vochtbalans wordt gewaarborgd. Het primaire doel van de ELIXIR-studie is om de non-inferioriteit van Xylocore® aan te tonen in termen van dialyse-‘adequaatheid’ (dat wil zeggen kt/V ureum). Deze studie loopt nog. Aanvullende studies zullen de mogelijke superioriteit ten opzichte van glucose moeten beoordelen in termen van membraanbehoud, cardiometabool profiel en harde klinische eindpunten, zoals overdracht van PD of cardiovasculaire gebeurtenissen. Het is nog te vroeg voor een conclusie.
