Substantiation Abatacept wordt gezien als een veilig middel met weinig bijwerkingen en goede behandeloptie voor kinderen met JIA welke onvoldoende reageren op methotrexaat (of een intolerantie hebben ontwikkeld) en onvoldoende baat hebben bij anti-TNF gebruik. Bijkomend voordeel is dat het ook als infuus gegeven kan worden in het ziekenhuis, zodat subcutaan prikken thuis in deze lastig te prikken groep niet hoeft. Registratie voor kinderen <6 jaar voor abatacept zou mooie aanvulling zijn op de huidige behandelopties. Remissie na de eerste of tweede lijn bedraagt ongeveer 70%. De inschatting is dat Orencia in de derde lijn zal worden ingezet.
