Van de jongeren van 12 tot 16 jaar heeft 5,6% naar eigen zeggen in het afgelopen jaar minstens zes maanden een depressie gehad; in 2020 was dat 4%. Over kinderen met een gediagnosticeerde depressieve stoornis zijn geen Nederlandse cijfers bekend. Op grond van buitenlands onderzoek wordt geschat dat bij circa 1% van kinderen onder de 5 jaar, 1,8% van kinderen van 6 tot 12 jaar en tussen 0,4% en 8,3% (afhankelijk van criteria en onderzoeksmethode) van kinderen boven de 12 jaar sprake is van een depressieve stoornis (Trimbos-instituut, 2009). Aangezien er al behandelopties beschikbaar zijn die met vrij grote terughoudendheid ingezet worden lijkt er geen behoefte aan dit geneesmiddel, ook gezien de ervaringen met de (beperkte) effectiviteit bij volwassenen.
