In totaal zijn er 6.000 lupus nefritis patiënten in Nederland alwaar wisselend in deze groep ook flares optreden. Belimumab zal toegevoegd worden wanneer er sprake is van een ernstige vorm (klasse 3, 4 en 5), hiervan zijn er een paar duizend patiënten in Nederland. De prevalente groep zal dit waarschijnlijk niet bij de bestaande behandeling krijgen. De verwachting is dat jaarlijks 200 tot 300 personen in aanmerking zullen komen om belimumab te ontvangen.
