C2 is een eiwit in de complementcascade dat, wanneer het wordt geactiveerd, leidt tot cel vernietiging. De binding van empasiprubart is bedoeld om de functie van C2 en de daaropvolgende complementactivering te remmen. Door de complementactiviteit te blokkeren, heeft empasiprubart het potentieel om weefselontsteking en de adaptieve immuunrespons te verminderen. Substantiation Empasiprubart is een nieuw middel dat onderzocht wordt bij patiënten met multifocale motorische neuropathie (MMN). In een vroege fase 2-studie verbeterde het de handkracht en verminderde het de behoefte aan intraveneuze immunoglobuline (IVIg) vergeleken met placebo, en werd het goed verdragen. Een fase 3-studie (Empassion) loopt om de effectiviteit en veiligheid van empasiprubart te vergelijken met IVIg, met een verwachte afronding in september 2026. Definitieve conclusies zijn daarom nog niet mogelijk.
