In Europa ligt de incidentie rond 7 tot 25 gevallen per 100.000 inwoners per jaar. Voor de subgroep van milde tot ernstige ARDS zal het waarschijnlijk om ongeveer1.000 patiënten gaan in een jaar met een normaal griepseizoen en zonder nieuwe respiratoire virussen.
