Het Zorginstituut adviseerde de minister voor Medische Zorg en Sport om Namuscla® niet op te nemen in het geneesmiddelen vergoedingssysteem en dus niet te vergoeden uit de basisverzekering. Wat het Zorginstituut betreft zijn de Europese stimuleringsmaatregelen voor weesgeneesmiddelen niet bedoeld voor een bestaand medicijn voor een zeldzame ziekte zoals Namuscla®. Door de extra kosten om Namuscla® te vergoeden kan andere goede zorg niet worden vergoed. Dat ondermijnt de solidariteit van ons zorgstelsel. Om ervoor te zorgen dat mexiletine voor patiënten beschikbaar blijft, adviseert het Zorginstituut ook om de apotheekbereidingen op bijlage 3A van het geneesmiddelen vergoedingssysteem op te nemen.
