Substantiation Dopamine was traditioneel een middel van eerste keuzen bij de behandeling van neonatale hypotensie, zeker ook bij prematuren. Door toenemend inzicht in pathofysiologie en werking wordt nu meestal de keuze aan dobutamine en noradrenaline/adrenaline/et cetera gegeven. Dopamine heeft echter wel nog een plaats in de behandeling (zeker bij sommige klinieken). Op dit moment wordt dopamine off-label toegediend. In 2018 werden 11.530 levend- en doodgeboren baby's te vroeg geboren. Van hen werden er 755 (0,5 procent van alle baby's) extreem vroeg geboren, vóór 26 weken zwangerschap (1). Het aantal baby's dat dopamine ontvangen heeft lijkt de afgelopen jaren te dalen. Er wordt geen groot patiëntvolume verwacht (2).
