BHV-7000 is rationeel ontwikkeld als een krachtige activator van heteromere Kv7.2/7.3-kaliumkanalen, het moleculaire substraat dat ten grondslag ligt aan de M-stroom (IKM). Bovendien vertoont BHV-7000 geen positieve allosterische moleculaire activiteit van GABAA-receptoren, waardoor de kans op ongewenste neveneffecten wordt verkleind. BHV-7000 is structureel verschillend van andere Kv7-activatoren, vertoont krachtige anti-epileptica-effecten en wordt goed verdragen in preklinische modellen voor epilepsie.
