Het middel had een bescheiden effect, maar het lukt wel om de cumulatieve steroïde dosering flink te verminderen. Op basis daarvan kan dit middel bij een beperkte groep patiënten van aanvullende waarde zijn, bijvoorbeeld bij patiënten met (relatieve) contra-indicaties voor steroïden. Er zijn nog twee andere trials met tocilizumab (vergelijkbaar preparaat als sarilumab) die vergelijkbare effecten laten zien. Vervolgens is gekeken naar het percentage patiënten dat in de eerste lijn bij de huisarts niet uitkomt met de behandeling met corticosteroïden en wordt doorgestuurd naar de tweede lijn voor verdere behandeling (13%). In 2021 werden er 15.245 DBC's geopend met indicatie PMR. In de praktijk wordt daar in de meeste gevallen eerst (off-label) MTx toegepast en zijn tevens biosimilars van tocilizumab beschikbaar. Het daadwerkelijk aantal patiënten dat daardoor voor behandeling met sarilumab in aanmerking komt wordt rond de 10% geschat van de groep die naar de tweede lijn wordt doorverwezen.
