Studie in Kidney International laat in voclosporine groep vaker klinische remissie van lupus nefritis zien ten opzichte van placebo, maar ook significant meer ernstige bijwerkingen en zelfs overlijden. De vraag is wat de plaats hiervan wordt in de klinische praktijk. De resultaten van de fase III studie zullen de doorslag geven. In totaal zijn er 6000 lupus nefritis patiënten in Nederland alwaar wisselend in deze groep ook flares optreden. Afhankelijk van de therapeutische waarde en de plaats in de behandeling wordt dit geneesmiddel aan een deel van deze patiëntenpopulatie voorgeschreven. Van de 350 ontvangen naar verwachting 60-100 patiënten Voclosporin. Daarnaast komen een paar 100 patiënten van de chronische populatie in aanmerking voor deze behandeling.
