Het ziektebeeld komt in lichte vorm bij ongeveer 1% van de algemene bevolking voor;1 1 op de 10.000 individuen heeft echter een ernstiger fenotype met klinisch relevante bloedingen, waarvoor behandeling noodzakelijk is (1). Patiëntaantallen zijn moeilijk in te schatten aangezien de klinische presentatie van von Willebrand zeer variabel is. Dus niet direct uit het aantal patiënten te extrapoleren. Profylaxe is nu slechts sporadisch in gebruik bij von Willebrand, maar is stijgend. Oudere studies toonden ongeveer 25% van type 3 op profylaxe, maar zeldzaam in geval van type 1 of 2 (2).
