Substantiation Voxelotor is een geneesmiddel wat de hemolyse bij patiënten met sikkelcelziekte sterk doet afnemen. Op pijnklachten lijkt geen groot effect tot nu toe. Het zal dus vooral van waarde zijn voor de patiënten met een hoge hemolyse en ter preventie van hemolyse gerelateerde orgaanschade zoals CVA, nier-schade, chronische ulcera aan de benen en pulmonale hypertensie/cardiomyopathie. Uit de voorlopige onderzoek zijn het vooral de patiënten met een laag Hb (<5.0 mmol/L) die het meest profiteren al hoewel het positieve effect op orgaanschade nog niet bewezen is. Hydrea verhoogd het Hb ook enigszins maar lang niet zo krachtig als voxelotor. De combinatie van Hydrea en voxelotor lijkt een extra effect op het Hb te bewerkstelligen.
