Substantiation Op dit moment zijn er nog geen overtuigende effectiviteitsdata in peer reviewed tijdschriften gepubliceerd. Uit drie verschillende artikelen uit een stuk van de NHS blijkt wel dat vroege behandeling met koper histidine (bij patiënten <1 maand oud) de overleving verhoogd van 62,5% tot 92%. Voor patiënten die later behandeling ontvangen, werd een overleving van 8,3% tot 50% gerapporteerd. Een van de drie studies rapporteerde daarnaast dat patiënten (<1 maand oud) een statistisch significante verbetering hadden op neurologische ontwikkeling in vier verschillende gebieden vergeleken met patiënten die pas later een behandeling kregen.

Additional remarks Prevalentie bij de geboorte wordt geschat op 1 op de 300.000 in Europa. De aandoening is X-gebonden en treft dus hoofdzakelijk mannen. (1) De diagnose moet snel gesteld worden om behandeling te starten. De overlevingskans is klein en er wordt voor Nederland verwacht dat er ieder jaar mogelijk één incidente patiënt in aanmerking zal komen (2).
