Alpelisib lijkt effectiever dan de huidige 'standaard', tegen minder bijwerkingen. Gelijktijdig gebruik van cotrimoxazol als profylaxe is bij dit geneesmiddel bijvoorbeeld niet nodig. Wel lijkt er een hogere incidentie van diabetes mellitus op te treden.

Er kan nog geen goede inschatting gegeven worden voor het aantal patiënten per jaar. Eerst moet er meer duidelijkheid komen ten aanzien van de precieze indicatiestelling en het resultaat van de fase 3 studies. Daarnaast zijn het veelal geen ziektebeelden waar sprake is van mortaliteit. Het geneesmiddel kan veel betekenen voor de morbiditeit, maar dat heeft wel als consequentie dat mensen het levenslang/langdurig gaan innemen. Kortom, het aantal mensen per jaar is niet zo zeer afhankelijk van de incidentie maar van de prevalentie.

Alpelisib tablet 150 gram is op dit moment €70,07. Op basis van de behandeling van een jaar zou dit ongeveer €25.000 gaan kosten. Gezien de studies zou er wel een nieuwe formulering moeten komen met een andere sterkte. Mogelijk zal deze formulering ook andere kosten met zich mee kunnen brengen.
